Work on Welshpool's new multi-million pound Tesco supermarket was completed today. The store is due to open to the public on March 14.

The 189 members of staff were this morning starting to get ready for the grand opening.

Store manager Linda McGill has been given the keys to the store and said staff were working hard stocking shelves.

She said the key handover signified that the structural work to the store on Smithfield Road was complete.

"We are all really excited and cannot wait for opening day," she said.

"We hope the residents of Welshpool and the surrounding areas will be pleased with the new store.

"My staff and I are looking forward to welcoming our customers into the new store and we hope that Tesco will become a key part of the local community."

The official opening ceremony will take place at 10am on March 14, when the store will make a £1,000 charity donation as part of the opening celebrations.

The new store will offer three hours of free parking and a petrol station and will be one of the first zero carbon supermarkets in the country.

Up to 600 people applied for the 189 jobs at the store, with 100 of the jobs going to Welshpool residents, while people from the neighbouring towns and villages have filled the remaining 89 vacancies.
