A piglet had to be rescued by police officers after it was found dumped in a block of flats in Whitchurch.

Residents heard the distressed piglet squealing in the communal area of the flats in Claypit Street just before 5am yesterday.

Police officers were called and had to set up a temporary home for the animal while they tried to trace its owner.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police said the piglet was returned home later in the morning.

"It was about 5am when our officers attended. Someone who had been messing around had taken the piglet from its home and had just abandoned it in the block of flats.

"The piglet was very distressed when we arrived and because it was so early in the morning officers were left with no other choice but to secure the piglet in the block of flats," he said.

He said officers had returned at 9am and had tracked down the field from where it was taken.
