A major discount fashion retailer is to open its doors in Whitchurch next month.

Peacocks will open in the former World of Wicker store in Green End on April 20, creating 14 jobs.

The store was due to open on February 17 but was delayed after company bosses revealed further time was needed to get the store ready.

The move has been welcomed by civic leaders in the town who feel it will bring much-needed competition and investment to the area.

Councillor Alan Chesters, mayor of Whitchurch, said: "Any empty shop being re-opened is a good thing for the town.

"Peacocks offers a wide choice and I think any competition with other shops in the town is a good thing.

"I know Peacocks had plans to come to the town before and then it all went quiet.

"I believe the former World of Wicker store has been closed for about three years and it is a big space, which should suit Peacocks."

Heather Steele, a spokeswoman for Peacocks, said: "I can confirm the store will open in Whitchurch on April 20."

The company has advertised jobs for a store manager and for an assistant manager.

The British chain already has stores in Market Drayton, Oswestry, Shrewsbury and Telford.
