A man was attacked by a gang of up to eight youths in Welshpool and thrown into a canal, police said today. The unprovoked attack happened on Friday night.

It resulted in the man being thrown into the canal by the Church Street car park.

The victim was treated for minor injuries at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Antony Topazio, a spokesman for Dyfed-Powys Police, said: "We are appealing for witnesses to the incident which is totally out of character for the town and we are appealing for help in tracking down the gang, particularly as one or two were dragged into the water by the victim at around 9.45pm.

"This is an unusual offence for the area. It was a vicious, unprovoked attack on a man.

"This type of behaviour is totally unacceptable and specialist resources are assisting local officers with inquiries."

He added the description of the group members was vague and it was not known whether the youths were all males.

Mr Topazio said it was believed there were a number of witnesses to the attack who were stood nearby.

"Police believe there were witnesses to the assault as bystanders were spotted on the canal bridge and close to the scene. We are now appealing for them to come forward," he said.

"We are particularly interested in the identity of anyone sighted in this area or the town centre vicinity who was wearing wet clothing.

"The victim was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital where he was treated for his injuries."
