Market Drayton came to a standstill to welcome back county-based soldiers returning from their seven-month tour of Afghanistan.

More than 1,000 onlookers lined the streets to show their support for the 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment, based at Tern Hill.

The soldiers were greeted by applause, cheering and flag-waving during yesterday's homecoming parade.

It started and ended in Church Street and was followed by a service at St Mary's Church and a civic reception at The Royal British Legion Club.

Addressing the congregation at St Mary's Church, the Reverend Martin Tanner, said: "In the last few days it has been good to see you around the town.

"We recognise that you do some of the hardest work anybody can do.

"We remember the injured, those who did not return and their families."

The gruelling tour to Afghanistan saw the loss of three soldiers - Ranger Aaron McCormick and Lance Corporal Stephen McKee, killed in action, plus the loss of Ranger David Dalzell in an operational accident.

Councillor Roger Smith, Market Drayton mayor, praised the community for showing their support .

He said: "I have been to a lot of events and this has got to be the best. The people of Market Drayton have really taken to the regiment and it is fantastic to see so many people here."

Onlooker, John O'Rourke, said: "The parade was extremely well attended and the regiment received a magnificent reception.

"People have come to show their appreciation for the work they do."

Captain Jeff Herbert, who was in Afghanistan along with his sons John and Luke, said it was good to be home.

"The work out there was really rewarding and a lot of the guys feel they have made a real difference. It is fantastic being back."

Major Jamie Humphreys said seeing his family, including his son Toby and daughter Ellie, was a fantastic welcome home present.

He added: "The support of people in Market Drayton has been first class."

Owen Paterson, North Shropshire MP and Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, attended yesterday's event.
