On-the-spot fines will be dished out to motorists caught driving the wrong way down Welshpool's one-way system, police said today.

Drivers could also face court proceedings if they fail to take heed of the new system.

Antony Topazio, communications officer for Dyfed-Powys Police, said someone would end up getting injured if drivers continued to drive the wrong way.

He said: "Dyfed-Powys Police would like to highlight its concern regarding drivers using the one-way system in Welshpool incorrectly.

"Motorists doing this risk receiving on-the-spot fines, court proceedings, or worse still, they could have an injury to an innocent person on their conscience."

The force has received complaints about motorists driving the wrong way.

The controversial one-way system opened in February and Welshpool Town Council has been doing it's best to make the changes easy.

Extra clearer signage was put up earlier this month.

Robert Robinson, town clerk for Welshpool, warned there may be delays at Easter. He hoped they would be minimal but there would be queuing at peak periods.

"Bank holidays normally create a lot of traffic through Welshpool," he said.

Anyone experiencing problems can call Dyfed-Powys Police on 101.
