An outdoor market today returned to the streets of Welshpool.

Welshpool Town Council said it planned to open the street market every Monday morning from today. Just three stalls set up shop this morning but attracted dozens of shoppers within the first few hours of opening.

Shopper Norman Jones, from Welshpool, said: "It is a really good idea by the town council and it has got people out on to the streets.

"I am hoping it will provide the town centre businesses with a timely boost as it should bring more people into the town centre.

"There was fruit, vegetables, household goods and handy day-to-day items on sale on various stalls and it made for a good atmosphere."

The market is based along Broad Street and plans have been in the pipeline for months.

Councillor Alan Crowe said: "It will provide a real boost for Welshpool and we are looking forward to seeing the town when it's in place.

"The town hasn't had a street market for a number of years, so it will be nice to see it return."

Mayor of Welshpool, Councillor Estelle Bleivas, added: "We haven't had a street market in Welshpool for years and I'm just so thrilled that the town will now be having one again.

"Hopefully it well help boost the town's trade. We're going to start off with only a few stalls at first and just see how it goes. We do have a waiting list but want to take things slowly at first and build on it."
