Two women had to be cut free from their car after a crash on the A49 between Craven Arms and Stokesay Castle today.

Two women had to be cut free from their car after a crash on the A49 between Craven Arms and Stokesay Castle today.

The accdent, which involved two lorries and the car, occured at 11.25am.

It left the A49 closed in both directions.

Firefighters from Craven Arms, Wellington and Shrewsbury used cutting equipment to free the women.

At 1pm police said they expected the road to be shut for several hours due to the size of the HGVs that needed to be moved. They have asked motorists to avoid the area if possible.

Maria Wilkinson, spokeswoman for West Mercia Police, said: "The two women have been taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital but their injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

"The road is blocked and we have requested help from the Highways Agency to divert traffic away from the incident while the vehicles are removed."
