Plans to demolish and rebuild an abattoir in the heart of the Shropshire countryside have been granted, despite local fears it could lead to a huge expansion.

Plans to demolish and rebuild an abattoir in the heart of the Shropshire countryside have been granted, despite local fears it could lead to a huge expansion.

Shropshire Council today granted permission for the new complex at the ABP headquarters at Hordley, near Ellesmere.

Objectors told of traffic problems already blighting the area and resident Debbie Maddock said the new building would allow the site's throughput to expand threefold.

Councillors were told the larger building would allow the company to provide better welfare for the cattle.

Andrew Cracknell, director of ABP, assured the meeting in Oswestry that there were no plans to expand its operations.
