Welshpool's controversial one-way system will be reviewed by council chiefs and engineers after massive queues blighted Bank Holiday weekends.

Engineers from Powys County Council will meet with Welshpool Town Council to discuss what improvements can be made to the system to cut queues.

Robert Robinson, town clerk, said queues on Good Friday, which stretched far out of town down the A483 bypass were a one-off.

But he admitted the system had not been working as well as hoped at busier times.

He said: "I am not convinced the traffic light sensors are working as they should be.

"On Good Friday, the reports I received were that the situation was terrible, but I am not blaming the one-way system for that day.

"I spoke to people who spent four hours in the car coming from Wolverhampton and people who took three hours travelling to Barmouth.

"I think Good Friday was just intense in every part of the country. But on other days the system has not been performing always as it should be. I have sent a list of things to the engineers and we will look at them in the coming days."

Mr Robinson said he expected the problems to be ironed out over the next 12 months.

"I don't expect it to be perfect instantly, but we are working on it," he added.

Last month, it was revealed 50 motorists have been stopped for speeding or driving the wrong way along the new system and councillors revealed they had been verbally abused in the street by people angered by the system.
