Pubs and clubs in Oswestry may get GHB tester kits in a bid to combat the use of the illegal drug.

The town has been highlighted as one of the UK's hotspots for the class C drug and The Oswestry Pubwatch group met yesterday to discuss how it could help tackle the problem.

Oswestry publicans welcomed the idea of the tester kits after Shropshire Young People's Substance Misuse team spokesman Roy Terrill visited the meeting to talk about the drug.

He revealed a GHB steering group in the county was considering getting the tester kits for Oswestry's licensed premises.

Police Constable Mark Moth, who was also at the meeting, said the kits were "fantastic" but expensive.

Frank Francis, chairman of Oswestry Pubwatch, said it could be useful for doormen in the town to use if they are suspicious someone may have the illegal liquid.

He said: "They could get the bottle and use some litmus paper to test it. It would really whack out the message that it is not tolerated in pubs."
