Now Robert Robinson, Welshpool Town Clerk, said the council had written to the Welsh Assembly to apply for the town centre to become a 20mph zone.
He said: "We are always looking at the one way system and how it is running and I think at the moment that it is settling down.
"I am still not 100 per cent happy with the traffic lights and think the sensors need to be looked at again in due course.
"But now the council has written to the Welsh Assembly to request a 20mph speed limit is put in place around the system.
"We have been looking at speed and think this is something that needs to be done sooner rather then later and we now await the Welsh Assembly response.
"We have had cases when some motorists have been caught driving in the wrong direction and it can be potentially very dangerous for them and other drivers.
"I realise that some people might forget but in some cases it's deliberate.
"We had a case a few weeks ago when someone moved traffic bollards and deliberately drove the wrong way and this behaviour just can't and won't be tolerated.
"Police have stopped more than 50 motorists for traffic offences since the system was introduced and they will be keeping a watchful eye."
