A Shropshire teenager who drowned in waters off the Spanish coast died despite efforts by his older brother to save him, it emerged today as officials released fresh details surrounding the death of Ethan Chant.

They said the 18-year-old, from Weston-under-Redcastle, near Wem, died despite his older brother's efforts to save him when he got into difficulties.

The new details emerged after initial reports wrongly suggested Mr Chant drowned after entering the water to save his brother James, which Foreign Office officials said today was not the case.

Mr Chant had been swimming off the Playa de la Bota beach at Punta Umbria, near Huelva, Andalusia, on Sunday evening and was later reported missing.

A major search and rescue mission swung into action involving helicopters, boats and jet skis and emergency workers found Mr Chant's body on Tuesday morning.

Officials at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office today said they had no details of when Mr Chant's body might be returned to the UK.

They added they were offering support to the family of the teenager.
