Letter: Would Tesco benefit Whitchurch?

I'm proud to have played for Whitchurch Rugby Club back in the late 90s and am surprised that it considers it needs a new clubhouse.
Whilst the cash from Tesco will benefit the rugby and hockey clubs, you have to ask will it be better for the community as a whole, the same community that supported and contributed funds to the rugby club?
Tesco, as an entity, seems to steamroller over every objection placed in its way.
I suggest that the rugby club examines the future of Whitchurch and what Tesco will bring to it if located on Edgeley Park and what it will take away from the town of Whitchurch.
Many of the players do not live in or even near Whitchurch and may travel 20 or more miles each way every week in order to play for Whitchurch, as I and two of my team mates did.
In Welshpool, Tesco has opened a new store. In order to accommodate it, the town council saw fit to build roads. The result is traffic now does not flow as smoothly as it used to and where one could drive straight through the town without stopping, one now has to wait at traffic lights with all through traffic going through the one junction, a truly crass decision.
These decisions are not just about money, they are about the benefit to the community.
That must be the greatest priority.
