Aldi's bid to build a new supermarket in Bridgnorth, bringing 13 jobs to the town, has been recommended for approval.

But Bridgnorth Civic Society chairman Mike Rainsford today hit out at Shropshire Council planners for backing the Stourbridge Road development, which he said "will kill trade" in the town.

Mr Rainsford, whose group had submitted a 20-page objection letter to the low-cost food store, said: "There is no imagination or long-term thinking in these plans and I can see no logic whatsoever in what they're doing. I don't feel we have been listened to and it's a great pity."

Mr Rainsford said he had little hope that Shropshire Council's south planning committee would overrule its officers when it meets at 2pm on Thursday to make a final decision.

He added: "But I can tell them now that they will live to regret it."

However, case officer Richard Fortune said in his report to councillors the proposed store was in demand in Bridgnorth.
