His body was found in the water between the bridge and Willeymoor Lock.
In a statement, Cheshire Police today said officers discovered the man's vehicle, an N-registered Ford Fiesta, on the A49 adjacent to the Shropshire Union Canal.
Constable David Alexander, who is investigating the death, said: "It is possible that the collision could have taken place any time from 10pm on June 2 and the following morning.
"We would stress we are not treating the death as suspicious, we are trying to establish the circumstances that led up to his death."
