Kidney patients in Mid Wales are losing out on vital treatment closer to home because of delays in bringing a dialysis unit to the town, it was claimed today.

Councillor Gary Price, of Llandrindod Wells, said the unit at the town's War Memorial Hospital, would provide treatment for patients across Powys.

Councillor Price said he was angry at the "continued delay" to the delivery of a fully operational kidney dialysis unit, which meant patients had to travel to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

He said: "The continued delay of the delivery of the kidney dialysis unit for Llandrindod Wells Memorial Hospital is extremely appalling to local patients who need dialysis treatment.

"In letters from the former Welsh Government health minister Edwina Hart, the unit was originally to be fully operational at the end of 2009, and then mid 2011. However, we are now in mid 2011 and no work has yet started on the kidney dialysis unit."

He has written to the new Welsh Government Health Minister Lesley Griffiths asking when the unit will be fully operational.

No-one from the Welsh Assembly was available for comment today.
