Thousands enjoy Newport Carnival

Thousands of people turned out for Newport's annual carnival - which this year defied the odds and the weather.
It was smiles all round as people young and old lined the streets to support the 39th Newport Carnival, which took place on Saturday.
Organisers said it felt "great" to see the event bounce back because its future looked bleak at the end of last year's event when former organising committee members resigned.
Graham Lee, joint chairman of the new organising committee, said crowds enjoyed a 10 kilometre road race, procession of floats and fun activities for all the family at Shuker Field.
The bonanza also featured the Royal Irish First Battalion Pipes and Drums Band, many of whom have just returned to their base at Tern Hill from a tour of Afghanistan.
Bands from Newport and Bridgnorth provided music and local charities were urged to take part with about 30 stalls on show on the field.
Downpours
Mr Lee said that the number of visitors had been slightly down on previous years because of downpours which struck once the procession reached Shuker Field.
But he added that the number of floats was up on last year, with about 28 taking part.
He added: "Last year's committee stepped down so there was an appeal launched for new members and about half a dozen came forward.
"It's great for the community at large to have the event back because many people enjoy the carnival and we really didn't want it to stop.
"Before the floats we linked up with Newport Running Club who put on their 10K race which came through town with people cheering them on.
"Behind them was the procession of floats which headed on to Shuker Field.
"We had good weather to begin with but as the floats arrived on Shuker Field it started raining and many people weren't dressed for the weather so some left early.
"It was a shame as it brightened up again later, but we are very pleased with how the carnival went as it was the first the new committee has put on."
He said organisers wanted to thank all who supported and helped organise this year's carnival.
He added next year's carnival promised to be a special event because it would mark its 40th year.
