Villagers will be starting a community meals on wheels service next month to look after the elderly in their parish.

Members of Selattyn and Gobowen Parish Council will launch the service on July 1 in response to concerns for the area's elderly.

Earlier this year parish council members set up a steering group to look into the possibility of setting up their own a voluntary-led service.

Penny O'Hagan, parish council clerk, said the group will reach out to people living Selattyn and Gobowen and also in Whittington.

She said: "The parish council is very committed to ensuring a hot meal provision stays within the community.

"It will be available for the residents that need it in the community."

The idea began after members of the public told councillors they were concerned not everyone in the area was getting meals.

The new voluntary group will include a parish council member and other community members.

Ron Jones, chair of Selattyn and Gobowen Parish Council, said: "It is good news and I'm so pleased we are doing it. This is a parish council initiative and I don't know if it is being done anywhere else."
