A teenager was left with a broken leg and facial injuries after being attacked by a group of men in Wellington town centre.

Police today issued an appeal for information after the incident in New Street.

Officers said a 19-year-old man was walking with some friends through the town near the Jobcentre when they were approached by a group of up to nine men.

Telford police spokeswoman Denise Wakefield said: "A verbal altercation took place between members of both groups.

"One of the men punched the victim to his face. Two other members of the group then kicked and stamped on the victim's leg."

Police and paramedics were called and the teenager was taken to hospital where he was treated for his injuries after the attack at about 12.45am on Saturday night.

He also suffered a cracked facial bone and bruising and swelling to his face.

Mrs Wakefield added: "The victim remembers being punched and kicked but then the next thing he remembers is waking up with police and ambulance attending to him.

"He was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford where he was treated for his injuries.

"At the time of the incident there were a number of people within the vicinity. We are eager to speak to these people."
