Bridegroom in court after fire at wedding venue

The case against a 36-year-old bridegroom accused of setting fire to a historic castle and wedding venue near Whitchurch has been sent to crown court.

Max Kay, of Waylands Drive, Liverpool, appeared at South Cheshire Magistrates' Court in Crewe today to face two charges of arson in connection with a major fire at Peckforton Castle, near Tarporley, on Sunday morning.

He entered no plea and the case was adjourned to July 26 at Chester Crown Court.

Kay was charged with arson intending to destroy or damage property and endanger life thereby, and arson being reckless as to whether life is endangered.

Kay was remanded in custody.
