A Mid Wales police station is to close in a bid to help Dyfed-Powys Police save £13 million. Chief Constable Ian Arundale said Llanfair Caereinion station will be one of two to close.

The move comes as the force looks to make massive savings.

The other station in Powys to shut is Ystradgynlais, with the force saying the station in Llanfair Caereinion is not used by the public.

It is also closing a number of other stations and buildings across the force area in a move which Mr Arundale said will save £1.1million over 10 years.

However, the force has also recruited 18 new full-time police officers and 21 special constables.

Mr Arundale said the force was "working hard to maintain front line services it provides for communities across Mid and West Wales".

He said the new recruits would start training this month and will be working in communities across the force area by February 2012.

The 21 special constables will be working by December this year.

He said: "Police buildings in communities that serve as a base for officers but are not generally used by the public have been reviewed.

"In the light of the savings the authority needs to make in order to balance its budget, they have been deemed no longer fit for purpose and will be closing.

"In order to deliver the savings at the earliest opportunity the force is looking to make the closures in the next three to 15 months.

"The force is reassuring the public that the service it provides to residents will not diminish."
