Businesses in a Mid Wales town faced a clean-up operation after vandals let off fire extinguishers.

Four businesses in Welshpool town centre were left with white powder from the extinguishers covering either the inside or outside of the shops in the early hours of Saturday.

Police warned the vandals to come forward now before they are tracked down.

It is believed the rampage began at 2am, with a fire extinguisher set off outside The Angel pub in Berriew Street. Spice UK, an Indian restaurant close by, was also targeted.

Dyfed Powys Police said workers at the Alan Price fruit and vegetable shop opposite Spice UK were stocktaking when a fire ex-tinguisher there was set off.

Then, when staff at The Celtic Company, Broad Street, arrived on Saturday morning they discovered stock had been covered in fire extinguisher powder which had been sprayed in through the letterbox.

Sian George, Dyfed Powys Police spokeswoman, said: "The fire extinguishers have been recovered and officers are in the process of speaking to witnesses and viewing CCTV footage.

"Offenders may wish to come forward as opposed to waiting for the inevitable knock on the door."

Anyone with information should call the police on 0845 3302000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
