Police were today given an extra 36 hours to question a 20-year-old man who was arrested after an 18-year-old man died following a suspected assault after a party at a Mid Wales flat.

Teenager Lewis Clarke, from Newtown, died on Saturday after being airlifted to hospital.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate Mr Clarke in front of shoppers in Long Bridge Street, Llanidloes.

It is thought he had been at a party held at Plynlimon House, in a flat above the L'Armoise clothes boutique.

An eyewitness claimed he blacked out after being punched by a friend during a bout of horseplay and hit his head on a sofa.

Police were called just before noon to the address on Saturday and arrested a 20-year-old man, also from Newtown, on suspicion of murder.

He remains in custody today and is "helping police with their inquiries".

Mr Clarke, a former Newtown High School pupil, lived with his mother and stepfather at the Lion Hotel pub in Newtown.

Floral tributes to the youngster were lined up outside the pub today and a Facebook page in his memory has already attracted more than 2,000 tributes.

Detective chief inspector Shane Williams, of Dyfed-Powys Police, said: "The 20-year-old male arrested in connection with the incident remains in police custody. He is also from Newtown."

Mr Williams urged any possible witnesses to the incident to get in touch.

A woman from Llanidloes, who also did not wish to be named, said: "He was here for a party.

"I am told he was messing about with a friend, got punched and blacked out after banging his head on a sofa as he fell to the floor."
