Officers said the alleged attack happened in the Cross Street and Watergate Street area and left a 21-year-old man with a serious hand injury.

Richard Ewels, West Mercia Police spokesman, said: "A 28-year-old man is due to appear before Shrewsbury magistrates today following an incident in Ellesmere late on Friday night.

"He is charged with wou- nding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, ass- aulting a police constable in the execution of her duty, af- fray and possessing a bladed item, namely a machete.

"It follows an incident in Ellesmere in Cross Street and Watergate Street just before midnight on Friday.

"It was a public order incident. A man aged 21 was taken to the Countess Hospital in Chester with a serious hand injury.

"Police were called and arrested the 28-year-old."

He said investigating officer Detective Constable Mat Crisp, of Oswestry CID, could be contacted on 03003 333000 by anybody who has information which could help with the police inquiry.
