The year 10 pupils from Thomas Adams School, in Wem, were punished after staff were alerted to one of them bringing Class B drugs into school.
It is believed that the drug in question was cannabis.
School bosses said they were shocked at the incident, which happened at the beginning of June and led to the pupils being excluded from school for five days.
The pupils are now back in school, but are being taught under supervision away from normal classes.
Councillor Edward Towers, mayor of Wem, praised staff for the way they handled the situation. He said: "Obviously we are disappointed to learn of the news, but I am fully supportive of the actions the school has taken. We need our young people to be protected and shown the importance of staying healthy and not getting involved in things.
"This is upsetting their education."
The Thomas Adams School was recognised as "outstanding" by Ofsted inspectors. In a statement the school said: "Although both staff and fellow students were obviously shocked and disappointed by the incident, we know that Thomas Adams School remains an outstanding school."
Richard Ewels, a West Mercia Police spokesman, said: "We will be assisting the school in monitoring the situation."
