Vandals have painted over diversion signs on a busy Shropshire route – leading heavy goods vehicles into Clun and damaging the town's bridge. Clun Bridge, on the A488, is used by HGVs to reach Wales.

It has been closed twice in seven weeks for repairs after being hit by lorries trying to cross, and has been hit again in the past week.

It has emerged a diversion sign on the B4368 at Purslow, east of the town, had been painted over, taking lorries into Clun, which is notoriously congested with narrow streets and sharp bends.

The sign has since been replaced after intervention by members of Clun with Chapel Lawn Parish Council and the town's Shropshire councillor Nigel Hartin.

Councillor Hartin said: "The directional arrow on the sign by the Hundred House which diverted traffic towards Bucknell and Knighton had been painted over with black paint, so drivers were heading straight into Clun.

"I don't know who has been targeting the sign – I guess it was some vandals."

No-one from Shropshire Council was available to comment.
