A Shropshire brewery has had one of its flagship real ales named one of the best beers in Britain.

The Salopian Brewery's Shropshire Gold ale reached the final in the Great British Beer Festival at Earls Court yesterday, scooping the Cha-mpion Bitter of Britain Gold Award but narrowly missing the supreme champion win.

Managing director of Shrewsbury-based Salopian Brewery, Wilf Nelson, said: "It was an excellent achievement to have come so close to winning the Champion Beer of Britain award."
