A swimming pool, fire station and youth club could be bulldozed in Whitchurch to make way for an expansion of the town's existing Tesco, it was revealed today.

A letter from the store giant to Shropshire Council reveals an interest in redeveloping the existing store in White Lion Meadow.

It could see plans for a controversial out-of-town store at Edgeley Park dropped. Tesco bosses originally said there were too many obstacles to contemplate a bigger town centre store as the site, which it leases from Shropshire Council, was bounded by other facilities.

The new twist comes after planners held talks with Tesco where it emerged Shropshire Council's land holdings at the site include the swimming pool, fire station and youth centre.

These could make way for a bigger Tesco, but no planning application has so far been submitted.
