A Mid Wales man caught selling heroin to an undercover police officer has been jailed. Michael Anthony Evans, from Bryn Castell on the Oldford Estate at Welshpool, was jailed for 18 months at Mold Crown Court yesterday.

Evans, 28, admitted supplying and offering to supply heroin in May.

The court heard a policeman, posing as a heroin ad-dict, went onto the streets of Newtown and Welshpool in an operation against class A drugs to catch dealers.

Miss Caroline Harris, pro-secuting, said the officer was approached by the defendant near the Spar Shop in the town. The court heard Evans started chatting to the officer and told him he could get him heroin from Shrewsbury. The officer gave him £20 and he returned with two heroin wraps.

Mr Huw Edwards, defending, said his client had previous convictions for 76 offences but nothing for supplying drugs. It was his case that the officer was a very good actor and pretended to be "rattling" for heroin.

The court heard he told the defendant how ill he was, how he wanted heroin but that he could not get any in Welshpool.

Mr Edwards said his client was not a dealer in heroin but he had been encouraged to get some for him for £20.

Mr Edwards said there was an element of entrapment which should be taken into account in sentencing.

Judge Mr Recorder Wyn Lloyd Jones told Evans: "You need to get a grip on your life and stop blaming everyone else."
