Stunt bikers – including world title winner Ben Savage – fairground rides and two processions of floats were among the highlights of Saturday's event.

Alan Hinton, carnival secretary, said thousands of people had taken part in the festivities by gathering on the streets for carnival processions at 1pm and 8pm and by taking part in a range of activities in Cremorne Gardens during the afternoon.

Carnival king and queen Matthew Harvey and Josie Sumner and junior king and queen Callum Jones and Holly Batha took pride of place on a float during the procession.

Mr Hinton said: "We had about 10 floats and the streets were packed with people who came out to watch and thousands took part."
