People lined the streets in Market Drayton to see the town's Royal British Legion's 10th annual parade and church service.

Organisers said yesterday's event had special significance as this year marks the 90th anniversary of the RBL.

The event featured a parade from Frogmore Road car park to St Mary's Church ahead of the church service, which began at 1.40pm.

After the service at about 2.40pm, the parade re-formed and marched from St Mary's Street into Cheshire Street, where a salute was taken.

It then returned to the RBL club in Church Street to be dismissed.

George Bratton, Market Drayton RBL spokesman, said the pipes and drums of the 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment were not able to lead the parade due to other commitments.

Instead, the pipes and drums of The Black Watch Association, who were at the town carnival, led the parade.

There were representations from the Army, Air Cadets, Scouts, Guides, Cubs, fire, police, ambulance and first responders.

Councillor Kath Brown, mayor of Market Drayton, hailed the event as a success and said it was a nice way to mark the 90th birthday of the RBL.

She said: "It was a lovely day. It was very nice to see so many young ones parading this time, including the cadets.

"There was a lovely church service and the food in the legion afterwards put on by the women's section was also very good.

"The Royal British Legion did a very good job of organising the event."

Councillor Brown added not many members of the public watched the parade.
