Free short stay parking for residents could be introduced in Church Stretton under a new council plan, with charges for visiting motorists hiked to cover the cost.

Mayor Bob Welch said the town should cash in on the area's 'beautiful' hills which attract tourists from Britain and beyond.

Councillor Welch unveiled the proposal last night at a meeting of Church Stretton Town Council and received the cautious backing of Shropshire Council leader Keith Barrow, who had been invited for a visit.

Councillor Welch said the plan would support town shops and claimed new powers under the Government's Localism Bill could help make it a reality.

He said: "We have the advantage, unlike some places, that we have our beautiful hills. If you speak to tourists, they think it's dirt cheap to park here. We could up the charges for visitors and possibly create a free car park, possibly near the chip shop, for residents.

"We believe we could generate more income for the town by customising the way we charge for parking in Church Stretton."

Councillor Barrow said he had 'absolutely no problem' with the idea.

He said: "That's exactly the sort of thing that has got to happen. I believe in devolving power downwards. I have absolutely no problem with what you have said and it's a conversation we should be having."
