The unitary council has received 151 letters from people, with 125 in support of it and 26 against.
People backing the scheme say it will encourage more people to visit the town centre, revitalise that end of the town and improve the choice of shopping for customers.
But those opposing it say it will hit trade for other town centre shops and lead to an increase in traffic.
Plans by Tesco to create a super store on Edgeley Park and develop a smaller metro store on its existing site at White Lion Meadow have also been submitted to Shropshire Council.
Members of campaign group Whitchurch21 believe Sainsbury's application would be good for the town in promoting competition and increasing footfall.
But they want Tesco to redevelop its existing site rather than build a new store.
