Consultants drawing up controversial new pay structures for more than 12,000 staff at Wolverhampton City Council were paid £151,484 in one year.
The revelation comes as councillors were tonight preparing to meet behind closed doors to thrash out details and the timescales of how they can bring to an end a long standing problem of making sure men and women as well as people in different departments are paid the same salary for doing jobs at the same skill level.
The money was paid to Manchester-based Ways HR Consulting and emerged in annual council accounts.
Paul Brown, spokesman for Wolverhampton City Council said: "Ways HR Consulting has supported the council's Single Status team and will continue to do so up to the final stage of the project.
"The work that Ways has conducted for the council is exclusively related to the Single Status project."
