In the past those with mobility problems had to struggle with a steep ramp if they could not use the stairs.
Market manager David Clough said: "There will be improved lighting throughout the building and cosmetic improvements," he said.
"The work is estimated to take 16 weeks with the market continuing to open throughout the project."
