A protest about the construction of the controversial Quantum Leap sculpture is to take place in Shrewsbury.

Last week, it was revealed that the final cost of the project had passed the £1 million mark after Shropshire Council lost a legal battle with Alun Griffiths Contractors over who sho-uld pay the extra costs incurred through delays.

A protest will now be held on September 24 at 10am.

Organiser John Wilson, from Meole Brace, said that he hoped members of the public angry about Quantum Leap would turn up to the protest at the site of the sculpture.

He said he had been 'disgusted' to hear the final bill for had exceeded £1 million.

"It has cost more than the Angel of the North and has made Shrewsbury a laughing stock," he said.

"I opposed it from the start. When they had the opening ceremony with Charles Darwin's grandson there, I was saying what a waste of money.

"Little did we know it would cost a million."

The original cost of the project was £483,000, but problems with the alignment of the ribs had to be corrected, leading to a delay and extra costs .

Shropshire Council, has been ordered to pay the contractor an extra £410,000, plus £115,000 legal costs.
