A fun day in Shrewsbury which was initially started to help encourage understanding between faiths after the London bombings was again hailed as a huge success today.

Organised by Shrewsbury Inter-Faith Forum, the fun day was held at United Reformed Church in Coleham Head on Saturday between noon and 4pm.

Entertainment included the Sunshine Steel Band, face painting, henna artists and refreshments.

Shrewsbury restaurant owner John Mustafa, who was one of the organisers, said that one of the reasons the group was set up was to improve relations after the London bombings in 2005.

He said it was a successful event and had attracted about 600 who arrived to take part in activities.

He said: "It was a good day and I am more than happy about how it went. Everyone enjoyed themselves.

"There were lots of children and lots of people from the community. The steel band was really good and the weather was very good. Everything was more or less perfect.

"I would like to say thank you to the community for supporting us."

He said he wants the event to become a regular annual event and promised next year's event would be 'bigger and better'.

The inter-faith forum holds regular meetings and includes representatives from organisations such as Shropshire Council and West Mercia Police.

The meetings are held at United Reformed Church on the second Tuesday of every month at 1pm.

The London bombings in July 2005 were a series of co-ordinated suicide attacks on Britain. The fun day also coincided with commemorations held over the weekend for the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attack on the World Trade Centre in New York.
