An elderly man driving a car involved in a crash near Bayston Hill on Tuesday afternoon died yesterday. A 93-year-old passenger, believed to be his wife, also died in the four-car crash.

In a separate crash on the A49 between Marshbrook and Wistanstow at about 9.45am yesterday, the male driver of a van and female driver of a car died after their vehicles collided. Neither has been named by police.

Councillor Bob Welch, mayor of Church Stretton, said town and parish councils along the route were considering making a 'detrunking' proposal. It would mean the road would no longer be classified as a trunk road and would be managed by local authorities rather than the Highways Agency.

But Highways Agency officials have insisted there are no plans to change the road's status.

Meanwhile, a woman whose car collided with a tree on the A458 between Cound and Cressage, near Shrewsbury, at 8.30am today has been airlifted to hospital.
