Bosses at Ludlow's railway station ticket office today moved to quash rumours it could close.

Ian Stewart, who runs Ludlow Station Travel with co-proprietor Francis Dunn, said closure had never been a possibility and business was going well.

He added the company had been running the ticket office at the station for the past 20 years.

A trade union report last week named the office, which is privately run, on a list of 675 stations across England and Wales potentially at risk due to cost-cutting measures.

Mr Stewart said: "We just want to put the record straight that we are not closing and Arriva Trains Wales have confirmed that fact.

"Our business is privately run and growing and a lot of people would be very aggrieved if we were to close, not only as we provide a service to customers, but also because we do the little extra things like booking taxis for elderly ladies.

"Closure was simply never on the cards.

"This is our livelihood, we are doing well and we are not closing."
