Whitchurch could hold its first carnival in eight years to celebrate next year's Queen's Diamond Jubilee – with the town's deputy mayor calling on it to become an annual event.

Councillor Rob Hewson said the event would be a great way for the town to join in with next year's celebrations and would give residents something to look forward to each year.

Councillor Hewson said: "One of our councillors came up with the idea. I think it is an excellent idea.

"I think we should be giving something back to the town and give people something they can look forward to. It also helps boost business.

"Marbury has its Merry Days, Calverhall has its fun day, Malpas has its own event. Then you have got Wem, Ellesmere and Market Drayton with their carnivals.

"Whitchurch is the only place in the area that doesn't have anything.

"We stopped having the carnival because a lack of finances. It was a shame because we always had an excellent day in Whitchurch.

"The pubs did a good trade with food and the fish and chip shops were heaving."

The proposal for a carnival will be discussed by town councillors at a town council meeting on Thursday in the Civic Centre from 7.15pm.

Councillor Hewson added: "We will be discussing the idea at the meeting and hopefully councillors will all support it."
