Italian coastguards had led the search for two women and a man who had been reported missing on Monday after failing to return to their campsite from a canoeing trip off the Italian island's southern coast.

It is thought that the Britons spent the night on a smaller island before returning to shore the following morning.

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office's consular office said the three people had been found safe and well yesterday.

All three are understood to be in their 40s.

Two are from the Welshpool area and the other is believed to be from the north of England.

The identities of the three people have not yet been revealed.

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: "We are aware of the reports of three British nationals missing off the coast of southern Sardinia who have subsequently been found safe and well."

Dyfed-Powys Police said today they had been informed about the incident but had not been involved.

Officials at HM Coastguard Falmouth were involved in helping Italian authorities contact the tourists' families.

A spokesman for HM Coastguard Falmouth said: "We did help the Italian authorities and we passed all details on to the police forces concerned."
