Crunch meeting on Welsh education in Llanfyllin
Campaigners are hopeful a crunch meeting next week will lead to the safeguarding of Welsh medium education in Llanfyllin. Campaigners are hopeful a crunch meeting next week will lead to the safeguarding of Welsh medium education in Llanfyllin. Powys Council Council is considering a major shake-up of schools which could see Welsh medium education moved from Llanfyllin High School to Llanfair Caereinion High School. Fears have also been expressed that Llanfyllin High School's sixth form could be lost in the changes. But opponents of the plan hope a special full council meeting on Monday will lead to the halt of the proposal. [24link]
Llanfyllin's Powys County Councillor Peter Lewis said he was one of several councillors who petitioned officers for the special meeting to be held.
He said: "We don't want this decision to be taken by just 10 members of the council cabinet," adding: "I am hopeful we can push this through and hopefully because everyone can have a say, it will lead to the plans being dropped."
Powys County Council leader Michael Jones say he does not support the calls for the final decision to be taken by the full council.
