A man has been arrested after an incident in which a man was slashed with a knife in a Whitchurch shopping arcade.

Officers launched an investigation after the incident outside Fiona's Coffee Shop in the Watergate Arcade at around 4pm on Tuesday.

During an argument involving several people, a 26-year-old man was slashed with a bladed instrument thought to be a knife. He suffered serious cuts to his head and hand.

A West Mercia Police spokesperson said today: "A 28-year-old man from Shrewsbury was arrested last night in connection with the incident.

"He remains in custody on suspicion of assault, causing grievous bodily harm with intent."

Police have renewed their appeal for witnesses to contact Market Drayton CID on 0300 333 3000 and thanked those who have already come forward.
