A woman had to be rescued by firefighters after becoming trapped thigh-deep in mud.

The woman was out walking when she got stuck in thick mud in a field off Pinewood Road, Ashley Heath, near Market Drayton, yesterday.

She called the fire service from her mobile phone after efforts to free herself failed.

Firefighters from Ashley and Newcastle found the woman by following her footprints along a path.

Rope was tied around her to prevent her from sinking further and the water rescue unit was called to help with the rescue.

Station manager Glynn Luznyj said: "A woman was walking in the area and took what she thought was a shortcut and then found herself stuck in some deep mud.

"Luckily she had her mobile phone on her and after trying to free herself called the fire service for help.

"It isn't obvious at first glance that there is deep mud in the area so we advise anyone walking in the fields off Pinewood Road to tread carefully."
