One of Shropshire's best- known restaurants has been stripped of its prized Michelin star, while another nearby in Powys has scooped one for the first time.

La Becasse, in Ludlow, had held its star for the last four years, but has been eliminated from the latest Michelin Guide for 2012.

It leaves Shropshire with one starred restaurant – Mr Underhill's, also in Ludlow.

Checkers in Montgomery is the only restaurant in Wales to join the list of starred establishments, selected in a feared and secret judging process.

It replaces Powys restaurant, Ynyshir Hall near Machynlleth, which has lost its place in the guide.

Sarah Francis, one of the partners at Checkers in Montgomery, said they were thrilled to win a star.

She said: "Myself, Kathryn Francis and Stephane Borie who is the head chef, are all partners in the business and we have been here since March.

"We are absolutely delighted to have been given a Michelin star in such a short space of time. I don't think the news has actually sunk in completely yet."
