Talks on the merger of two village schools in Shropshire are gathering pace, governors said today. A committee has been set up to look at the plan for Shawbury Primary School and St Mary's Primary.

Governors from the two schools have formed a new committee following Shropshire Council's decision on the merger.

The Joint Strategic Committee has been tasked with deciding the site of the single school and appoint a new headteacher in time for next September.

Shropshire Council wants to create a single school as part of its education shake-up. It says the change would save £85,000 a year.
