A 27-year-old man was assaulted and robbed while making his way home in Shrewsbury in an early morning attack, police said today.

The victim was near the bridge in Moneybrook Way, Meole Brace, on Saturday morning when he was approached by a man and a woman.

The man asked for a cigarette then money before punching the victim to the ground.

He then demanded his wallet before making off towards the BP garage.

Richard Ewels, for West Mercia Police, said: "We are appealing for witnesses or information which will assist the investigation.

The incident happened between 5am and 5.15am. The offender was a white male in his early 20s, about 5ft 10ins tall with short hair and quite muscularly built.

"He was accompanied by a woman who appeared younger and was wearing a hoodie. She took no part in the robbery."

The victim, who suffered face injuries, was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for a check-up.

The stolen wallet contained about £12 and various cards. Call police on 0300 333 3000 with information.
