ONE OF the largest hauls of Roman coins ever discovered in Shropshire has been declared treasure by a coroner after it was unearthed by a man using a metal detector.

The hoard of more than 9,000 coins was left undiscovered for 1,700 years but was found by 32-year-old father-of-one Nic Davies from Ford, near Shrewsbury, buried in the ground at a secret location in August 2009.

Now that the bronze coins have been declared treasure by coroner John Ellery they could end up returning to Shropshire to go on display in a museum.

But first a government panel must decide what the coins are worth.
