A huge 118ft wind turbine could be built in the north Shropshire countryside to power a farm. Bosses at Winston Farm in Tetchill, near Ellesmere, are behind the 50kw micro generation turbine.

The turbine would be about 118ft high with 31ft blades and would stand on a plateau at the 300-acre farm.

It comes as applicants Wigley & Sons submitted a similar planning application for a wind turbine at the nearby Dandyford Farm in Hordley.

Both want to use the power generated by the turbine to slash their energy bills.

A report in support of the new plans says: "The proposed use of the wind turbine is for the generation of electricity from a renewable source, the wind.

"The applicant intends to reduce reliance on imported electricity through the on-site generation of wind energy, which will in turn reduce costs to the farming operation and support the diversification activities of the business."

The report adds: "The applicant also supports efforts to address and seek solutions to climate change and global warming, and is therefore making a personal effort to contribute to national requirements for clean, disaggregated renewable energy generation."

Parish councillors said they were unaware of the plans for Dandyford Farm but anticipated objections from some residents.

Members of the public have until November 17 to comment on the plans for Winston Farm as part of the consultation process.
